I’m Sorry But You’re Not The Best
Ouch! I’m sure I struck a nerve, but it is true. There will always be someone somewhere who can do it better or more effectively than you, and that’s fine. People are actually more interested in the title “I am the best” rather than just being themselves and functioning in their life’s purpose. They get caught up in trying so hard to win the praises of others or be seen to be the best. By any means necessary, they want to be in the spot light. Not to appear judgmental, there is nothing really wrong with that. However, I believe that such an attitude tends to be distracting, which results in wrong focus.
There was a guy who was the hot shot of his day. People revered him; even top government officials highly respected him. His name was John. At some point, they thought he was the Messiah, that is, the super savior. They called him the best in town. This could easily have gotten into his head. He could have gladly accepted the title, played the part and enjoyed the spot light; at least for a while, until the real savior showed up. Surprisingly, he dismissed their praises and accolades. He knew his place and refused to be distracted. His life’s purpose was to prepare the people for the coming of the true Messiah, and he did just that. John was so focused that his excellent work attracted crowds of people. His attitude boasted confidence, even though his purpose might have seemed menial (Oo I like that! Your purpose might appear menial, but your result will resonate worldwide waves). At the end of the day, he was a success and Jesus Christ, the true Messiah, praised him for his work. John 1:19-34.
Excellence attracts. Once you focus and do your work right and diligently, it is automatic that you would be praised, which results in you being thrust into the spot light, and possibly recorded as one of the best in your field. Do not allow ‘being the best’ distract you. Find your life’s purpose, focus on it, and give it your all. Your work will speak for you and the inevitable would happen—the world would hear of you. Now, one last piece of advice: When the world hears of you and begins to praise you, do not allow it get into your head. We have heard of very talented people who entered the spot light but allowed fame to get into their heads. Their fame was short-lived and they ended up a wreck. In other words, don’t lose focus. Instead, continue striving for better, not best. I say this to say, “Best is a destination but better is a journey/process.” Be better. Life is a journey, keep moving.
Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than working for ordinary people. Proverbs 22:29.
