Change Your Label

1 Chronicles‬ ‭4:9 And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow

There are some events or experiences that we go through, that leave us with labels for life, unknown to us. Usually, our narrative includes a ‘Because.’ Because is a word that stands to express a reason. It gives the reason why something happened. In some instances, we pass such labels to our loved ones; similar to Jabez’s name being ascribed to the ordeal of his mother, during childbirth. Unfortunately, he had to carry such label for a period of time in his life until he reached a point of realisation that he could either live a life of frustration or change the narrative.

Is there something stopping you from expressing your full potential? A ‘Because’? Have you allowed your ‘Because’ to dictate your present circumstance and hence, the quality of your life? Truth be told, your ‘Because’ has left incomplete statements in your life for you to fill.

  • Because ………. I am …………
  • Because I was born in sorrow, I am a failure
  • Because I was raped when I was young, I am worthless
  • Because I was born in poverty, I am disadvantaged… and the list goes on and on

Your ‘Because’ has placed a stigma on you. Your because has placed an invisible label on you. You can’t see it, but others can see it. In some cases, people do not want to be around you after a while because you carry the stigma of worthlessness, and nobody wants to be with a worthless person. Perhaps, no one wants to do business with you because the label of poverty is stamped on you. You are smart but you believe you do not have what it takes to live the good life. As you think in your heart, so you are.

No matter how honorable you are, if you are labeled by your past experiences and circumstances, you will be deplorable. It is not by your qualifications, skills, beauty or who you know. If you unconsciously bear a negative label due to an experience, it can strangulate your great destiny! I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth. Ecclesiastes‬ ‭10:7

Here’s some help on how to change such label

  • See yourself the way God sees you.
    • But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 1 Peter‬ ‭2:9 KJV
    • Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb. I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! Psalm‬ ‭139:14-15 MSG
    • God sees you as beautiful, marvellous, awesome and more, irrespective of what your situation or some people describe you to be. Agree with God and not the negative opinions of folks.
  • Change what you think
    • Stop belittling yourself and know that you were brought into this world for a reason, to solve a problem and fulfil purpose. And you will do just that.
    • Think big and not small for you are a child of a very big God!
  • Change what you say
    • Your words are as a result of your thoughts. If you change the way you think, the way you speak will change.
    • Do not speak defeat or like someone that has given up, but speak winning words to yourself. I AM A CHILD OF GOD. I AM A WINNER. I AM BETTER. I AM STRONGER.
  • Change how you act
    • Your action is the expression of your belief—whatever you do gives an indication of your belief system
    • Act in line with your new winning mindset and do not be intimidated by anyone or anything…be fearless!
    • Go for that project believing you will win or that relationship, as a person of worth!
